The BODY KNOWS the TRUTH
“The Body Knows the Truth” (2020-2021) is a collaboration between two women visual artists crossing disciplines, drawing inspiration from our individual worlds as we connect to the archetypes of the collective experience through stories, myth and movement. This body of work is fueled by the need to see what we can do as painters, individually to contribute to the continuum of art and connect to our common story. It is an exploration of identity, belonging and transformation. During 6 months, separated by covid and distance, we connected via zoom feeding on each other’s ideas pushing our own paintings.
In 2022 the Drawing Room in San Francisco held an artist talk series in their gallery for their exhibition Women Rising. This is the video of my presentation for the piece, Dream Sequence IV.
The painting “Dream Sequence IV” was born a from the story, Dream Sequence, found in the book The Fairy Tales of Hermann Hesse, a collection of 22 fairy tales written by Hermann Hesse between the years of 1904 and 1918.
In this specific game, my collaborator and I read the story to each other without knowing what it was about. We read out loud, a paragraph or two, then each painted on their own for 10 minutes, then back to reading a couple paragraphs, and then again painting, and so on until the story was over or we ran out of time. As the story developed, the painting developed, the finale always a surprise.
This project was not only about the recording of this experience onto the canvas, but also about the exploration of the need for artists to collaborate and the Synergy that’s created when we do.
